Calabash Shorts Group 1 at ZIFF 2008A Selection of Zimbabwean Short Films Shown at Film Festival
The calabash panorama of short feature films is brought by Ziff to celebrate and encourage Zimbabwean talent in film-making.
The Zimbabwe Calabash is an annual showcase of films that have been directed by, produced by, written by or star a Zimbabwean. Calabash Shorts Group 1 at Ziff 2008 consisted of Chipo's Promise, Ndichiri Mudiki and A Castle of Cards. Chipo's Promise2008, 30 mins, English/Shona with English subtitles, directed by Tongai Furusa. Chipo is left to care for her two siblings, Netsai and Themba, after their parents die of AIDS.This is challenging as Netsai leaves up to her name, and is further complicated by the non-support of some members of the society they live in. Although this film is subtitled 'Untold Stories in the time of HIV/AIDS, Chipo's story has already been told in Zimbabwe. Perhaps the story that now needs to be told is that of her neighbour, Mrs Mudimu. It is almost unbelievable that someone can be so scheming and unsupportive at this stage in Zimbabwe, but this portrayal hints at the the fear that Mrs Mudimu has for her teenage son who sympathises with and befriends the AIDS orphans despite her efforts to stop this. One of the best way to deal with prejudice regarding HIV/AIDS has been to address people's fears. This film is in many ways realistic and managed to cover the wide range of emotions that accompany the issue of HIV/AIDS. It provides a fresh, and in end upbeat, look at an old story and therefore makes a worthwhile contribution. Ndichiri Mudiki2008, 23 mins, directed by Watson Chidzomba. This first film production by Oliver Mtukudzi, Zimbabwe's well-known musician, has little dialogue. It is the story of a young widow struggling to come to terms with the realities of her bereavement. Many issues are brought to the fore: these include the need for family counselling and unity; individual counselling on issues of letting go and moving on as well as self-esteem in women. A Castle of Cards2008, 12 mins, English/Shona with English subtitles, directed by Paolo Genovesi This short film shows a young man's emotional trip from fear to acceptance of death. One thing that is notable about this production are the beautiful outdoor shots featuring some of Harare's best buildings as well as scenes in a park. It manages in a short time, with some humour, to explore the thinking behind the young man's final view of death. Even if one does not necessarily agree with the decision he comes to, at least it can be seen where he is coming from. Teaching materialsAll three short films have dealing or facing death as a common theme and would be suitable for use as teaching materials for HIV/AIDS education in Africa, especially.
